Lumen spei… for string quartet 2020-2022

Lumen spei…- the light of hope. It is a response to the search of the composer connected with the subject matter of light. Light that liberates and at the same time attracts with its force to considering divine secrets. Hence the decision towards the inspiration by the Old Christian method of meditation, Lectio divina, from whose structure the names of the three parts of the work are derived: meditatio, oratio, and contemplatio.

The musical story “The return to the source” directs the attention of the young listener to the value of relationship with another human being, communing with nature, the ability to follow signs. Septem verba… for symphony orchestra (2019)

The seven words of Christ on the cross

A one-part piece, composed of seven internal parts, each of which is inspired by a different sentence uttered by Jesus just before his death:

  1. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.
  2. Today you will be with me in paradise.
  3. Woman, behold, thy son! Behold, thy mother!
  4. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
  5. I thirst.
  6. It is finished.
  7. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.

The piece is full of contemplation, symbolism, and emotion. It strives for unity, simplicity, and peace in the variety of musical thoughts, which includes both lyricism and drama.

My God is hungry for choir and percussion (2016)

It was inspired by a poem by Fr. Jan Twardowski, Hungry. The piece is a play of opposites: a subtle sound with great volume, homophony with polyphony, sadness with joy, screaming with silence and hope. The percussion colours and enlivens the contemplative part of the choir, and the symbolically treated woodblocks and marimba referring to the tree of the cross deserve attention. The melody has a similar meaning, the sloping direction of the main theme reflects the look from above, and the modal scales give the piece a passionate nature. The culmination of emotions finds an outlet in the final chorale, which is a focus on what is most important…

In principio… for harp, cello and piano (2015)

The inspiration for the creation of In principio… was the Prologue of the Gospel according to St. John. The composition is in one piece, but there are three distinct links in it, each one referring to a different fragment of the biblical text. The first one refers to the words: In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The middle one: “In Him was life, and life was the Light of men.” The last one: “And the Light shines in the dark, and the darkness has not overwhelmed it.” The work is based on a number of characteristic musical thoughts, which are sound reflections of the new life unfolding under the mother’s heart, with which the composer connects the creation of the world and man, mentioned in the Prologue. In principio…, according to the author’s intention, should transfer the listener into the space of eternal peace and infinity.

  • Karolina Nowak-Waloszczyk, cello
